C-Section Scar Massage

If you have had a c-section, regardless of how many years ago it was, you should be massaging your scar.

Massaging your c-section scar is an important step to helping it heal.  C-section scars, even when visibly healed can develop adhesions.  The connective tissue under the scar can become stuck to muscles and in some cases, organs.  In the case of adhesions causing organs like the small and large intestines to stick together, surgery is the only option for removal.  Anecdotally, I have seen adhesions cause many problems for women and men years after surgeries in my career as a nurse.

Symptoms from adhesions

Women who have developed adhesions from their c-section scar may experience:

  • pain in the lower back, pelvis, or during intercourse
  • frequent urination
  • numbness around the scar
  • a lumpy feeling around the scar
  • digestive trouble
  • feeling like you can’t “connect” with your core

When to start the massage

Usually, you can start massaging your scar when the wound is healed, around 6 weeks postpartum.  It is never too late to start massaging your scar, regardless of how long it’s been.

If you are able, see a massage therapist or physical therapist for tips on scar massage.

Tips for massaging:

Use an oil (coconut, olive, almond, any will do)

Start gently.  You may feel a little discomfort or pulling but a scar massage should not be painful.

Using three fingers, gently massage left to right first, then right to left.  Work up/down, side to side, and in circles.

Work the area immediately on and around the scar first, then move away from the scar.

Start superficially and then deepen the massage as you can tolerate. If you find an area that is lumpy, gently work that area before you move on.

This entire process should not take more than a few minutes.  Try to do it several times a week, if not every day.

What do you think? Are you ready to massage your scar? Let me know if you have any questions!
